Big Metal Planters

Planter Materials

Every Big Metal Planters planter is built from either Corten weathering steel or 5052 aluminum. Both are made to last outdoors; the right choice depends on the finish and the look you want.

Corten Steel

Corten steel

Weathering steel which naturally forms a protective rust patina, softening the industrial look of steel with the rugged texture of aged rusty metal.

New Corten steel arrives with a gray mill finish. Within a few weeks rust begins to form, and within about a year it develops a full, mostly even reddish-orange patina. The steel continues to weather for the life of the planter.

Because the patina is rust, it can stain porous surfaces such as concrete, stone, and pavers where water runs off the planter. If the planter will sit on a stain-sensitive surface, plan for that in advance or choose aluminum.

Aluminum

Powder coated aluminum

High-grade T5052 with a durable powder coating for a sleek look in your choice of color.

Powder coating is a durable oxidation resistant coating that will keep your planter looking new with little to no maintenance.

Which Should I Choose?

Choose Corten steel if you want a natural weathered look and do not mind the patina changing over time. Choose aluminum if you want a clean painted finish, a specific color, or a planter that will sit on concrete or other porous surfaces where rust staining would be a concern.

Both materials are available in rectangular and circular shapes, with the wall styles appropriate to each material.
